Building Collaborations

Organizations and communities must build effective collaborations to handle the multitude of complex issues facing them.  Leading a collaborative process in an organization or a community can be formidable and frightening.  Utilizing her knowledge of how our brains work best, Janus Development Group has developed coalitions which have achieved results never thought possible by the participants.  Her methods and processes have worked in working through environmental justice issues in the chemical corridor along the Mississippi River as well as urban communities such as Alexandria VA.

In mid 2007, the City of Alexandria asked Janus Development Group to facilitate a stakeholder group formed to help Alexandria take advantage of the opportunities provided by the National Harbor and Gaylord development opening in Prince Georges County Maryland in April, 2008.  The National Harbor Collaborative identified initiatives and recommended to the City Council what would have the most benefit for the funds they allocated.  So impressed with the Collaborative’s efforts, the City Council allocated nearly $1.3 million dollars for the project.  The identified initiatives were finished on time achieving results for Alexandria businesses as well as generating increased revenues through additional tourism dollars.  As one participant said, “We achieved more in less time than any other initiative before.”  The effort was recently recognized with the “Award of Excellence” by the Virginia Downtown Development Association
